From the moment of diagnosis, cancer preys on the emotional, physical, and mental well-being of both the diagnosed and everybody close to them. Feelings of fear, disorientation, shock, and anguish prevail, and you face these concerns with hundreds of questions. Apprehension and uncertainty rule your understanding of how to live and cope with cancer. But, you aren’t alone.


Coping with cancer and all its stages of treatment may be one of the toughest challenges anyone could ever be asked to face. So don’t go it alone. There are hundreds of programs and support groups out there designed with the intention of inspiring hope and a more positive outlook. Below you will find a list of some great cancer support programs in San Diego.


  • Those of you familiar with the Padres Pedal beneficiaries will recognize the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. They offer a variety of patient and family care programs designed by experts with a wealth of experience to provide the best integrated, whole-person care. They seek to improve your quality of life and relieve emotional stress by, “strengthening meaning, value, resilience, transcendence, and dignity.”


  • The Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, another Padres Pedal the Cause beneficiary, offers great support groups for kids and teenagers with cancer as well as for their families, siblings, and friends. A couple of their programs include CHAMPS, a support group for children with cancer ages 6-12, and Some of My Best Friends are Bald (SOMBFAB), a support group for teen cancer patients and their siblings.


  • Both Sharp HealthCare and Scripps Health offer phenomenal support groups and services to help patients and family members manage cancer and treatments. Check out a variety of complimentary therapy programs such as journaling and music therapy, or some of the cancer-specific support groups to help you connect with others in your situation.


  • Susan G. Komen provides a comprehensive list of local, San Diego support groups and programs dedicated to assisting you through the disorienting tribulations associated with cancer. While you will find many that focus specifically on assisting those affected by breast cancer, there are plenty of others listed that provide services for all cancers and people.


  • Tried yoga? Be Well, a non-profit specializing in helping those living with cancer and their caregivers live a less stress-filled life, offers 11 weekly ​Yoga for Cancer Recovery classes in San Diego and Riverside County for a suggested donation of $5-10 per class.


  • If you’re a cancer survivor looking for something to help you get back on your feet, the 12-week Livestrong program at a local YMCA is a great place to start. In 2007, Livestrong partnered with the YMCA to help promote the importance of physical activity after a cancer diagnosis. The programs are offered at little to no cost, and they are specifically designed to help improve your physical well-being and quality of life.


The main point to remember is that you are not alone in fighting cancer — a tremendous community of support and love is out there to embrace you and those close to you. Don’t let cancer steer the boat.
