My 20 Year Journey to Change the Way Cancer is Managed
By Ronnie Andrews
President of Medical Sciences at Life Technologies
Cancer is a disease that touches everyone in the world in one way or another. It has greatly affected my family as I’m sure it has many others. My beloved grandmother was diagnosed with cancer on four different occasions. Her battle with cancer consumed most of her life and most of our time together.
As a southern boy and oldest grandchild, there is a patriarchal expectation to serve the family, and my grandmother challenged me as a young teenager to find a cure for cancer. Since then, making cancer a disease that can be treated like a chronic illness has become my personal mission in life. You could say I have been chasing cancer for most of my adult life.
Cancer is not just my personal mission. Life Technologies has made a deep commitment to advancing the management of complex diseases, beginning with cancer. The last five years have been especially remarkable in terms of our knowledge of the genomic information now available, and I am very bullish about the future.
In order to help ensure cancer research continues to constantly improve, I believe our company’s involvement with opportunities such as Pedal the Cause is crucial. This is a unique opportunity for us because it supports everything we are about in medical sciences. Most people don’t realize how fortunate we are to live in the San Diego County area, where we have a robust selection of world class cancer facilities right in our backyard. Our involvement in events that bring awareness and funding for these centers ensures that we are giving back to our community, and supporting our customers who are using our products to further the knowledge of how cancer works.
Not only is Pedal the Cause a great place for Life Technologies to add philanthropic dollars, but it’s also an excellent way to give personal energy and support to a cause I know many of us are deeply connected to. Through participation, employees are able to expand their efforts beyond our office space and unite within a community dedicated to the same cause.
For me, Pedal the Cause is a terrific way to continue my mission and honor my grandmother, as well as all the friends and family that have suffered from this devastating disease.
It is an uplifting experience to be able to work alongside such a driven group of employees, all dedicated to creating a healthier world. We are at an amazing point in the world of cancer, and I feel very fortunate to be a part of the future of medicine. With the commitment and participation of our employees and our community, we can make a difference.
I know my grandmother would be very proud of the effort and progress made to date, but there is still a long way to go to make the disease chronic. By supporting Life Technologies’ Pedal the Cause team, you can be part of the local efforts of the incredible greater San Diego scientific community to end the suffering!
