$1.3 million raised by 2015 Ride presented to beneficiaries
One of our two favorite days of the year is when we present the money raised through our event to our beneficiaries (the other being ride day). On April 21st, we gathered at Rady Children’s Hospital–San Diego with a group of distinguished guests and presented an honorary check for $1.3 million representing the total raised by the many riders, donors, volunteers and sponsors involved in the 2015 Pedal the Cause ride.
Accepting the check were leaders from our four San Diego-based beneficiaries: Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Rady Children’s Hospital–San Diego.
Pedal founder Bill Koman and executive director Jay Indovino presented the check to Dr. Scott Lippman, Dr. Donald Kearns, Dr. William Roberts, Dr. Garth Powis, Dr. Tony Hunter, Dr. Reuben Shaw, and Mr. Stephen Jennings.
“From the beginning, we’ve wanted Pedal to be more than just a cycling fundraising event,” stated Padres Pedal executive director Jay Indovino. “We want it to be a movement that mobilizes the entire San Diego community to join in the fight to end cancer. The money we’ve presented here today is a monumental step towards that goal and is a result of the efforts and contributions of everyone who has rallied to the cause.”
The money raised stays here in San Diego and is used to fund research grants for groundbreaking collaborative research being conducted by research teams from these leading institutions. After meeting rigorous criteria and evaluation, it was our honor to announce seven new Pedal-powered research grant awards during the ceremony.
You can read summaries for the winning grants here. We plan on highlighting each grant and providing more in-depth coverage in future posts.
Researchers from the winning teams were on-hand as their respective research projects were announced on-stage by Dr. Scott Lippman.
On behalf of the thousands of riders, donors, volunteers and sponsors involved in the 2015 Pedal the Cause ride, Padres Pedal is honored to fund this important, life-saving research. We’re hard at work on the 2016 ride with our new partner, the San Diego Padres, and looking forward to an even larger award next year. Thank you to everyone who makes this possible! 🚴
