Padres Pedal the Cause Launches Seventh Season for a World Without Cancer

Premier fundraising organization aims to raise $3.3 million for local cancer research

Following a record-breaking year of fundraising, Padres Pedal the Cause announced today that registration is open for its seventh annual event, taking place on November 16, 2019 at Petco Park. The one-day charitable event benefits exploratory cancer research taking place at San Diego’s finest basic science and clinical research institutions: Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, and Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego. Since inception in 2013, Padres Pedal the Cause has funded 53 collaborative cancer research grants and clinical trials, fueled by the mission to accelerate cures for cancer.

“Cancer affects every corner of our community, and we want to fight back. One in three Americans will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, so Padres Pedal the Cause is committed to accelerating cures for cancer by investing in start-up research,” says Anne Marbarger, Executive Director of Padres Pedal the Cause. “San Diego is one of only a few areas in the U.S. that has more than one National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, and we’re lucky that ours are all within a few miles of each other, fostering a truly unique and collaborative approach to unlocking potential cures for cancer.”

Padres Pedal brings together the community to raise funds for cancer research through an annual event that takes place at Petco Park. The one-of-a-kind experience offers fun for the whole family: with cycling routes that cross the Coronado Bay Bridge and tackle 25, 55, 88 or 100 miles, stationary spin classes live on the third base line, a superhero-themed kids challenge, and a family-friendly 5K run/walk along the Embarcadero. Participants cross the finish line on Petco’s centerfield and enjoy a host of complimentary post-event activities, including massage, physical therapy, a shower in Petco Park locker rooms, live music, kids games and unlimited food and beverages from local favorites. New this year is the Cancer Crusher Challenge, where ambitious participants can take on more than one event: ride 25 or 55 miles plus a spin class, or a spin class plus completing the 5K. Alumni of the event include Mayor Kevin Faulconer, singer/songwriter Jason Mraz, and San Diego Padres’ favorites Randy Jones, Trevor Hoffman, and Tony Gwynn, Jr., many of who have already committed to participating again in 2019.

100% of every dollar raised by Padres Pedal participants is donated directly to cancer research. In 2018, Padres Pedal reached a record-breaking $2.94 million in funds raised by more than 2,500 participants, all of which will fund cancer research projects and clinical trials this year. “Cancer is the number one cause of death in San Diego, so we know that everyone in our community has a reason to ride, run, walk, spin, volunteer, and raise funds for a world without cancer,” remarks Marbarger. “At Padres Pedal the Cause, every mile, every step, every dollar raised gets us closer to cures.” With a goal to raise more than $3.3 million dollars in 2019, Padres Pedal the Cause is on track to have another record-breaking year.

Registration for the 2019 event, taking place on November 16, 2019, is now open. For more information on how to join Padres Pedal the Cause as a sponsor or event participant, please visit www.gopedal.org.
