Tammy Blackburn: “She was going to look after me.”

Family-oriented and fun-loving Tammy Blackburn was on the way home from a Hawaiian vacation when she felt something in her left breast that hadn’t been there before. Soon after, she was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma.

The thought of having to say goodbye to her family was the hardest part, especially the thought of leaving her two nephews, who Tammy is very close to. But after her treatment, Tammy’s sense of family grew – her medical team, and especially her doctor Rebecca Shatsky of Moores Cancer Center, assured Tammy that her care didn’t end with her last treatment. “I would still be under her care. She was going to look after me. And those are the most important words that a cancer patient could hear.”

This November, Tammy kicked off the inaugural Padres Pedal the Cause 5K with inspirational words for all participants. And she walked the 5K with her now extended family of her medical team from Moores Cancer Center.
