The Battle Against Cancer is a Team Sport

The battle against cancer is a team sport
As someone whose life has been affected by cancer, I’m extremely proud to partner with Pedal the Cause for its inaugural ride. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. and the leading cause in San Diego, which is home to more than 1,000 of our CareFusion employees.
Pedal the Cause provides us with a tremendous opportunity to come together as a CareFusion team and support our community to help eradicate cancer. The mission of Pedal the Cause fits perfectly with CareFusion’s vision to improve the safety and cost of health care for generations to come – a vision we encourage our employees to bring to life through their efforts to improve the wellness of the communities around them. It’s the type of event we’re excited and honored to support.
Once CareFusion signed on with Pedal the Cause, I went to work recruiting our team by first enlisting the support of another senior leader. Together, we encouraged employees to participate by providing them with information about the event and an incentive to join the team – a matching donation from the CareFusion Foundation of up to $1,000 for the first 50 team members. Within five days we had nearly 20 team members. After scheduling a team training ride and having the Pedal the Cause team onsite for two in-person information sessions, we had a few more. Now, three weeks later, we’ve signed up 41 team members and counting!
To keep that momentum going through October, and to build camaraderie within the team, we’ve ordered team jerseys and plan to host regular team training rides and events. We are also taking advantage of the great support the Pedal the Cause staff provides to our CareFusion riders.
Everyone has a different motivation for joining Pedal the Cause. Like me, cancer may have affected your life. You may have an interest in cycling, or want to support a great cause. Some of our riders want to achieve a personal fitness goal. Regardless, your organization – large or small – has the opportunity to make a difference through Pedal the Cause.
