We are now Padres Pedal!
It’s official! We’ve re-branded as Padres Pedal the Cause and we couldn’t be more excited about this new chapter. We first partnered with the Padres last year and are now joining forces to grow the event for 2016 and beyond, with the goals of raising awareness, participation and fundraising to do everything we can to pave the way for a cure. We have some great changes in store for the 2016 event to make it bigger and better than ever!
The new identity and logo were announced at a wonderful ceremony on Saturday, April 23rd as the Padres hosted the St. Louis Cardinals at our new event home, Petco Park. During the pregame, Padres President and CEO Mike Dee along with Pedal the Cause founder Bill Koman were joined at home plate by Pedal riders, cancer survivors, and local researchers to unveil the new logo and to present a ceremonial check for $1.3 million raised by the 2015 event.
“We created Pedal the Cause as a way for our San Diego community to raise money for important cancer research that otherwise might go unfunded by the government,” said Pedal founder and two-time cancer survivor Bill Koman. “Partnering with the Padres will expand that reach and help fast-track the research collaborations that will hopefully lead to a cure.”
“One in two men and one in three women unfortunately will develop cancer in their lifetime. Being touched in some way by this horrific disease is something we all have in common,” said Padres President and CEO Mike Dee. “It’s going to take every one of us coming together for the fight of our lives to find a cure, and that is Pedal’s mission. That’s why the Padres organization is so proud to join forces with Pedal the Cause. Together, we are committed to growing this event, raising more money, and keeping those funds here in San Diego to support the world-class cancer research that takes place in our community.”
Pedal participants were honored during the on-field presentation. Lining both foul lines were riders, donors, researchers, Yellow Jersey winners, adult and child survivors–many with their bikes and proudly wearing their jerseys. Padres Pedal announcements were shown on the Jumbotron and other screens around Petco Park. This was tremendous exposure for Padres Pedal and our important battle to help fund the groundbreaking research being conducted here in San Diego by our world-class research institutions. Again, just a fantastic pre-game ceremony to help raise awareness for Padres Pedal in our community.
After that, it was time to Play Ball! All attendees were treated to a VIP reception at Petco Park’s newest group space, Sun Diego Beach and the Craft Pier by Ballast Point. With a one-of-a-kind view of the game from centerfield, we were treated to some exciting baseball by both teams. At one point during the game, a home run landed in our group and the baseball was promptly presented to one of the our child survivors in attendance. A great night was had by all! 🚴
